A coffee with Rebecca Imogenkate
Hi Rebecca! Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? And please introduce yourself alongside a photo that best shows your personality.
Hello lovers! Of course! So firstly, I rarely get called Rebecca - I have a long list of nicknames, from go Bex, to Bec, to B. I am a true Capricorn in the sense that I consider myself extremely loyal and ambitious. I believe in energy and karma in the sense that what you put out in the universe will be returned to you. Right now, I am the happiest I have ever been, I feel like I am finally getting to know my true self and where I want to go in life.
I honestly don’t show my personality in photos (or at least the ones I post) so I assume I come across very serious on social media; when in fact, my number one goal in life is to make the people around me laugh. I chose these two images because basically, I always wear black, drink coffee and am on the go!
We’d love to know a little more about you! Where did you grow up, and where do you live now?
Where do I live, good question ha! Right now, I am in Vienna and have been for two months. I was previously in Paris for two months - and last year was spent in Paris too. I grew up and went to school in New Zealand and England, went on to study at London College of Fashion and then moved to Monaco for 5 years.
You’ve founded your own fashion brand, Robe The Label. Can you tell us a little more about the brand, and its core values?
Living in Monaco, I was always poolside or heading to the beach and I discovered the hard way that the bikini market was severely oversaturated but there was a huge gap for garments to wear over those bikinis.
The name ROBE came because I wanted something short and memorable - and living in France it means ‘to dress’ but also plays on the fact that I opted to create the initial ‘BOUND BY LOVE’ collection entirely from Terry towelling.
As a point of difference ROBE will remain a monochrome brand indefinitely.
How did the inspiration for Robe The Label come about initially, and how do you keep inspired each day?
I studied fashion and it was always my intention to have my own line. I am also obsessed with telling a story via imagery and marketing.
What’s been the most challenging part of starting your own label, and what’s been the most rewarding?
Oh gosh… where do I start! All I can say is, if it was easy everyone would be doing it.
Fashion is so complex, issues with manufacturing arise that until you’re faced directly with them, you never even knew they existed. There is honestly so much to consider when creating a garment, from the fit of the piece to marketing of the piece - and at the moment I am doing it all! Fun fact is I almost didn’t release our best seller (the bodice) which is proof that it’s best not to overthink a collection because you will put yourself off before you have even started.
Most rewarding is seeing girls in my garments, and hearing how confident they feel in them!
No arguments – Robe The Label gives us a sense of poolside glamour! Speaking of travel, I'm curious to know which places are still on your travel wishlist. Are there any destinations that you're eagerly looking forward to exploring?
I feel so lucky that working freelance has enabled me to work from wherever and visit so many beautiful places.
I have some photoshoot ideas for ROBE lined up in places I am yet to visit!
And I would love to do a safari in Kenya one day.
Here at Lepelclub, we love to relax either with a coffee or a cocktail. When you’re not working, how do you like to unwind?
With collection 2 so close and working with manufacturers all over the world makes it impossible for me to switch off - If I put a film on in the evening, within 2 minutes I am writing emails.
A cocktail is always a good idea though ;) and I never say no to a good night out dancing with friends until the early hours of the morning - I guess that’s the only time I unwind fully!
What’s the best piece of advice, personal or professional, you’ve ever received?
Personal would be: ‘visualise yourself as your higher self and show up as her everyday’, ‘be the energy you want to attract’, ‘keep your love life and your next move private’ … and of course my favourite is ….. ‘if people say you can’t do it - do it twice and take pictures ;)’.
Business is: ‘if your dreams don’t scare you they aren’t big enough’ and as mentioned before - don’t overthink anything because while you’re sitting there overthinking, someone else is out there bringing your idea to life!
And finally, how do you hope to stir things up in the future?
Oh I love to spicing things up, my life and routine is forever changing. Unfortunately I am going to keep you guessing for a while longer but follow me to find out….
Love,
Bec x
