Who is Jess?
Hi! I’m a 28-year-old Social Media Manager and content creator, currently looking after the Women’s Lifestyle brands at Hearst UK: Cosmopolitan, Red and Prima magazines, and working with lifestyle brands on UGC in my own time.
I live just outside of London with my fiancée and two sausage dogs, Frank & Moose. I love all things vintage (especially homeware), film photography, finding new restaurants (the notes app on my phone is my prized possession) and hosting dinner parties for family and friends. I’ve always been a very creative person, and love being able to bring that into my job on a daily basis.
Where did you grow up and where are you based now?
I grew up in Berkshire, before moving to London after finishing uni, where I lived for 7 years all over the city. I made the move out of London at the end of last year, and moved back to where I grew up for more space and a slower pace of life. I still work in our central London office for most of the week, so I have a nice split of city and country, which works perfectly for me.
What is it like being a social media manager at a magazine / what does an average day look like for you?
In one word? Busy. Social media is extremely fast-paced and reactive, what works one week might not land the next, and it could be because of anything from cultural factors, seasonal factors, or even just a change in trends or algorithm. I have an amazing team, who I couldn’t do my job without, and work with some very talented people across graphic design, PR, talent teams, editorial teams and video to create out digital output. No day looks the same, but an office day always starts with a strong coffee. A lot of my day is taken up by very unglamorous admin, emails and meetings, and this time of year is always about getting ahead for content over the Christmas period, and starting to think about plans for the new year. The more fun elements of the day might involve heading to press events to keep up to date with the latest drops, video interviews with talent and celebrities, campaign branding meetings, creating assets and lots and lots of scheduling.
Where do you derive a lot of your inspo?
I find inspiration everywhere, from Pinterest to more traditional media and everything in between. I’m always making notes and saving posts for inspo, and try to keep on top of the changing trends. I love looking to the teams behind the screen for inspo too. For example, the MUA behind the looks on the latest it girl, or the graphic designer behind the brand that everyone’s talking about. I love looking to other content creators across different niche’s for inspo too, and I spend far too much time on TikTok…
What made you get into the content side of branding through a magazine?
I knew I wanted to work for a magazine as soon as I watched 13 Going on 30 and was sold the glamorous life of publishing - weren’t we all? I studied English Literature at University, and interned at a publishing agency in my second year, where I eventually landed a job out of Uni. I hated it, and it put me off working in the industry for a while, which at the time felt like such a set back, but in hindsight, was a huge blessing, because it meant I pursued a career via a slightly different route. I ended up in the world of social media while progressing my career with a beauty brand, which led me to eventually make my way back into the world of magazines, via a route I loved.
How do you stay updated on brands / trends/ platform changes and emerging social media tools?
It’s hard, because everything changes so much, but I make an effort to consume the media I want to influence the type of content I put out across the brands I work with. Following other social media accounts in a similar niche as you, attending webinars and reading the latest reports from social platforms (Pinterest Predicts, I love you). And at the end of the day, looking at the social content other people in your industry engage with will be the best way to stay on top of things. Social media and content media relies on human engagement, so looking to your audience and to what other people around you are consuming will be the best way to stay on top of changes.
How do you relax after a long day at work?
Now it’s dark so early, I couldn’t think of a better way to relax and switch off from work than a hot shower, fresh PJs and cooking something delicious for dinner. I love cooking, and it really helps me tune out everything else, especially with a good playlist on (currently the Wicked soundtrack, sorry neighbours). I also love watching something cosy on TV, whether that’s Youtube vids (hello Vlogmas) or a movie. My fiancé and I have really gotten into playing games together in the evening too, so that’s a nice way to unwind and switch off.
How do you take your coffee?
As basic as it comes, in latte form. Always oat milk, always iced. I’m notoriously bad at drinking things quickly, getting distracted easily and leaving hot drinks to get cold. Hence, the iced drinks all year round.
